Benicia Youth Soccer League Kicks Off Its 36th Season
by Justin D. Evangelista, BYSL Communications Coordinator
The morning of August 22, 2009 got off to a great start in Benicia, with the annual BYSL Opening Day Parade marching up First Street. It was led by the Benicia Cub Scouts Pack 128 and the Benicia Fire Department, whose bright and shining red trucks cleared the way for the 80-plus teams making the half-mile trek to Fitzgerald Field. Spectators and store merchants smiled and waved to all the teams as they passed by. The cheerful sounds of the parade set up the vibe that would be the theme for another successful opening day for soccer.

Once the teams reached Fitzgerald Field, each team was announced by BYSL President Barbara McBride. The players from TOP SOCCER were the first to sprint across the field as their teams were announced. McBride then announced the U6 through U19 house teams individually, each of which entertained the crowd with their own unique entrance. Freshly customized banners with creative team names, like "Benicia Rockstars," "Boom Boom Pow," and "The Death Squad," were proudly displayed and carried across the field by coaches and team parents. Music was provided by the “INFAMOUZ DJ’s,” who played heart-pumping jams that made the event even more exciting. A few of the Arsenal Select boys and girls teams came out to represent the AFC side of BYSL. Introduced were, the U10 Girls Class III squad, led by head coach Peter French, and the U12 Girls Class III team, coached by Graham Mayle. Glen Ramirez, head coach of the U10 Boys Class III squad, sprinted with his team as his U10 Boys Class III squad were introduced to a roaring crowd. The trademark gold and black uniforms shined in the morning sun as the crowd cheered for the select traveling teams who represent our club.

The Mayor of Benicia, Elizabeth Patterson, took time out to speak at the opening day ceremonies. She spoke with encouragement as she addressed the crowd, the league, the players and the coaches. She gave her blessings to BYSL for another successful season. Kristen Green, of the U19 “Uh-Oh! Oreos”, honored the league with a brilliant performance as she sang her rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner.” Then, BYSL’s version of “The Beatles”, by the sound of the applause anyone would have thought the same, the UK International Trainers, led by Alex Lobban introduced themselves and their program and promised to deliver another successful year of training as they did last season. The BYSL Board of Directors were also introduced and recognized for their time and hard work with running the league.

To close the ceremony and to “Kick” off the season, four year old (BYSL’s youngest player) Keanu Villanueva, from the U6 Stampede, and Kristen Green (age N/A BYSL’s oldest player), from the U19 Uh-Oh! Oreos, took center field. Everyone in attendance then counted down, “5-4-3-2-“, and then as the sound of “1” was yelled out, young Keanu, channeling David Beckham, booted off a fabulous strike to a waiting Kristen, who then replied back with a perfect pass back to Keanu. Thunderous cheers from parents in the stands, as well as the players and coaches on the field, filled Fitzgerald Field and signaled the official start of another Benicia Youth Soccer League season.
