The Benicia Arsenal FC 99 Boys team finished their season in style this weekend by winning the NorCal Premier State Cup Division 3 championship in Woodland CA. The semi-final took place on Saturday in a wind swept Woodland with the team already in fine form in the competition having topped their group to reach the quarterfinals the weekend prior.
Arsenal won the semi final in dramatic fashion with a golden goal scored in the first period of overtime from centre forward Tyler Caruso. Jacob Watson had put the gold and black ahead 1-0 with a fantastic run and fine finish but Impact 99 from Brentwood hit back with an equalizing goal moments into the second half. With the score level at 1-1 after 70 minutes the game went into overtime. A through ball to Caruso from Watson seconds before the end of the first period was calmly controlled and scooped over the keeper to send his team into the Final of State Cup amongst wild celebrations from teammates and parents alike.
The final saw Arsenal drawn against the Napa Soccer Club Gladiators who had scored the most goals in the competition up until the final. Benicia however has an outstanding group of defenders in Mario Ferreira , Jared Gormley , Christopher Caffey , Kobe Tooch and Justin Cruz who commanded by team Goalkeeper Jose Hernandez worked hard together to not concede a single goal in the final.
The midfield ahead of them in Matthew Ramierz , Angel Silva , Fernanado Soria and substitute Andreas Archilla worked tirelessly and creatively to find opportunities for the forwards to feed off of and as the team took the field for the second half the hero of the hour was found as substitute Nathan Morimoto pounced on a cross from Watson to calmly fire the ball into the corner of the net and send Benicia 1-0 up. The 99 boys team were not done however and as Caruso and Watson chased every loose ball it was fitting that the cup MVP Jacob Watson who had accumulated 5 goals in his last 6 outings went on one of his trademark powerful runs towards the opposition penalty area to round the last defender and drive the ball low and hard past the Gladiators goalkeeper to put the game beyond reach and send an ecstatic Arsenal team to victory as NorCal State Cup champions for only the second time in the clubs history and become the first boys team from Benicia to win the tournament at any level.
Other notable contributions from the following players helped the team reach the final: Cody King who was outstanding as backup goalkeeper, Gabe Nelson , Karissa Ruble , Michael Nord and Julia Lindemuth.
The team will resume their season in January at Tryouts on 26,27th January and February 2nd, 3rd at Community Park. www.beniciasoccer.org.
