Tryout Organization and Evaluation

All tryouts are organized by birth year. Each player should attend the correct tryout sessions according to their year of birth. This is irrespective of which team your child played on last year (if applicable).

If deemed that it is in their best interests, your child may be invited to tryout with an older age group. This assessment is made during the first tryout session and will be the decision of our evaluation panel. If a player is invited to try out with an older age group, a representative of our club will communicate this with the player and parent/guardian. It is important that this policy is followed correctly so that all players are given a fair and open tryout process.

Do not send your child to an older age group without an invitation from a club representative. The vast majority of players will remain in their own age groups for the entirety of the tryout process.

All players will be evaluated by our club’s evaluation panel. The evaluation panel is comprised of Benicia Arsenal FC’s Director of Coaching, Technical Director, professional coaches and selected independent evaluators. Participants are evaluated according to their technical abilities, tactical awareness, physical attributes and behavioral and mental skills.

Each age group will have 2 tryout sessions. Players are strongly encouraged to attend both sessions in full. Players who attend both sessions will have a better opportunity to show the evaluation panel their abilities.

Check in Procedure

Parents/guardians should accompany the player to the first tryout session to ensure that all registration details have been collected accurately. Players cannot tryout until the correct details have been collected. Please arrive early and head straight to the check in tent upon arrival. To avoid long lines at check in and give all players an opportunity to be evaluated fully and accurately, players should arrive 20 minutes before the session begins.

When will I know if my child made it onto a team?

Upon completion of the 2ndtryout session, all players will be contacted by a coach via phone call and/or email. Please make sure that contact details given at registration are accurate and that you check your emails, spam folders and voicemails in a timely manner following the 2nd tryout session. All players’ families will be contacted as soon as possible. However, please be patient and do not make assumptions about the outcome of the tryout until you have been contacted directly. Everyone who attends tryouts will be contacted, whether they make it onto a team or not. This process can take up to a week to complete (especially if there are multiple teams formed in an age group), although our aim is to complete this much sooner. To help us contact all families in a timely manner, please be prepared to accept an offer to play on a team within 48 hours of the offer.

Spectator Guidelines

During tryouts we ask that all spectators (including volunteer assistant coaches) stay back from the field and do not try to communicate with players or evaluators. During these sessions, players should be allowed to concentrate on their game without added distraction or pressure and evaluators should be allowed to focus on the session. For sessions at Benicia High School, we ask that all spectators stay in the bleacher areas on the outside of the black fencing. At Benicia Community Park, we ask that all spectators stay up on the hill surrounding the field or behind the dirt pathways.

PLEASE NOTE THAT PETS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN SPECTATOR AREAS AT TRYOUT LOCATIONS.

ALCOHOL IS NOT PERMITTED IN SPECTATOR AREAS AT TRYOUT LOCATIONS.

Player Preparation and Equipment

Players should attend all sessions with cleats, shinguards, appropriate soccer clothing (plain white tshirts are advised) and lots of water. Players are also encouraged to bring a soccer ball to prepare in advance of the tryout and be ready to play at the start of the session. Evaluators are looking for players who are coachable, listen to instructions and are prepared, in addition to having good soccer skills.

PLEASE NOTE THAT NO FOOD OR DRINK (OTHER THAN WATER) WILL BE ALLOWED ONTO THE FIELD/TRACK AREA AT BENICIA HIGH SCHOOL.

Special Considerations and Injured Players

If a player is injured and unable to participate or has other extenuating circumstances, their family should still register for tryouts and also contact our Director of Coaching at doc@beniciasoccer.org

Recreational League Registration vs Tryout Registration

All players who attend competitive tryouts and do not make it onto a team will still be able to register for our recreational league at the cheapest price, on conclusion of competitive team formation, as long as they register prior to May 31st.

Players who have already registered for our recreational league can still try out for a competitive team. If they make it onto a competitive team, their registration can be transferred over to the competitive program.
